Before we ever hit the road this morning, I had visions of pulling out of the driveway at exactly 8:00 a.m. sharp. (You know, like one of those families in the car commercials where everyone smiles, the luggage fits perfectly, and nobody has to stop for the bathroom.) Well… we didn’t quite make that dream come true. We left at 8:30, which honestly wasn’t too bad for us. But of course, that was just the beginning of the adventure.

We made it all the way down the hill to Costco to fill up with gas when Kris realized she had forgotten the baby blanket gift for DJ and Desirae’s new little one, Davin. Back up the hill we went. Once we grabbed the blanket, I figured I’d better use the bathroom one last time before we left town. Good thing I did, because right there by the bathroom I noticed a prescription we had forgotten to fill.

So, back down the hill again — this time to Smith’s. I got out to pay for the prescription and realized I couldn’t find my wallet. Panic set in. Had I left it at Costco when I got gas? My mind was already rehearsing the speech I’d have to give to the bank while canceling all my cards. We hustled back to Costco and looked all around the gas pump, but no wallet. Starting back up the hill again, I was about ready to admit defeat when I looked around more carefully. Wouldn’t you know it? That wallet had slipped right out of my pocket when I went to the bathroom earlier. (I can hear my mom now: “Check your pockets, Ronnie!”)

At long last, we actually left town at 10:30 a.m. Only two and a half hours later than planned. Honestly, for us, that’s still a win.

By 12:30 we pulled into Nephi for lunch, and I was already feeling like I’d been up since 4 a.m. By the time we reached Fillmore, I was really dragging. I toughed it out until Beaver, but that was it. The Beaver Creamery came to the rescue — partly because they had room for us to hog two parking spots with the RV, and partly because I knew I’d need ice cream as motivation to keep going.

I crashed on the RV couch and took an hour-long nap. Best decision I made all day. When I woke up, we rewarded ourselves with ice cream cones. I went with licorice flavor — and let me tell you, it hit the spot.

Refreshed, we drove on to St. George, fueled up with gas, and tried to push on. But by the time we reached Mesquite, the sleepiness came back with a vengeance. We pulled into a casino parking lot and decided that was far enough for one day. We set up the RV, ran the CPAP off the inverter, and got some rest.

Well, at least until 4:00 a.m. That’s when the batteries gave up the ghost and shut down the machine. I’ll admit, I didn’t plan that part too well — but hey, it wouldn’t be a Coleman road trip without a little “creative problem solving.” Tomorrow we’ll tackle the short drive to Las Vegas and finally meet baby Davin.
